The LBTO User’s Meeting Workshop is scheduled for June 22, 2017 from 16:00-18:00 in the Convitto della Calza – Oltrarno Meeting Center. The workshop will start with an introduction to a group project and then proceed with two sessions focused on 1) mask design with the LMS software and 2) observation set-up, planning, and script creation with the new Observing Tool

The proto-typical merger remnant NGC 4038/39, better known as the “Antennae” is the nearest late-stage merger. A better understanding of how young stars form and how the progenitors of Globular Clusters form are key goals in understanding galaxy formation and evolution. UV-near through near-IR imaging (U-band through K-band, including H-alpha narrow band) was used to identify candidate Young Stellar Clusters (YSCs) and Globular Clusters (GCs). The photometric data were used to construct spectral energy distributions (SEDs) for each candidate and iteratively fit with Charlot & Bruzual (CB2007) stellar population models. From this data, luminosity functions were fit to the various populations, and ages were inferred for all candidate clusters. As powerful combinations as deep photometry and SED fitting are, they cannot compete with power of spectroscopic observations.

The motivation for this project is to obtain follow-up near-infrared spectroscopy of candidate YSCs and GCs in the Antennae. The source for the target candidates are HST ACS/WFC imaging of the Antennae obtained in 2004 and published in Whitmore et al. (2010), particularly the most luminous candidate YSCs and GCs. The goal is to obtain near-infrared spectroscopy using the G200 grating and HKspec filter with 0.5″ wide slits, which covers 1.5-2.4 microns and includes powerful diagnostic lines found in this region (e.g. CO band-heads, [FeII], Brackett Gamma, molecular Hydrogen) to confirm and constrain the results obtained with the HST data, and better calibrate it for candidates too faint for even the LBTO to detect.

Workshop #1 Creating a LUCI MOS Mask

The Antennae is an ideal candidate for obtaining multi-object spectroscopy (MOS) using both LUCIs. The main body of the Antennae fills the LUCI FOV, and there are many candidate YSCs and GCs bright enough to obtain good S/N in a reasonable amount of time (here, we allocate ~3 hours for this project). In this part of the workshop, we explore the steps needed to design a LUCI MOS mask for the Antennae, including using user provided astrometrically corrected images and user supplied target catalogs. This session will provide a general guide to designing masks applicable to a wide range of targets. We will discuss important requirements and useful guidelines and hints for creating a properly designed MOS mask (and equally applicable to MOS masks for use with MODS). This is an interactive session, and participants are encouraged to discuss and raise questions.

Workshop #2: OT and Scripting Basics

Lead by: Dr. Michelle Edwards

In this workshop we will review how to use the new cross-platform GUI-based script preparation tool, called the LBTO Observing Tool (OT). Using a basic LUCI imaging program, participants will explore the structures of an observation, navigate the OT’s directory-like tree structure, and learn how to use the program’s flexible built-in visualization tools.

The workshop will then continue with the Antennae project. Users will download and utilize the extensive OT Libraries and Templates and the mask they created in Workshop #1 to make a MOS acquisition and spectroscopic observation of the YSC and GCs in the Antennae. This interactive session will focus on designing a viable instrument set-up and sequencing plan and will end with users generating their own binocular “twin” scripts.
